Paleochristian Necropolis of Tarragona — Catalonia, ES

Near the mouth of the Francolí river lies an early Christian cemetery used from the mid-3rd to the 5th century. About 2,051 tombs have been excavated, making it the most important open-air late-Roman burial ground in the Western Roman Empire. It was found by chance in 1923 during the building of a tobacco factory. The cemetery grew around a martyr's basilica honoring Saint Fructuosus. According to record and tradition, Bishop Fructuosus and his deacons Augurius and Eulogius were burned alive in Tarragona's amphitheater on 21 January 259, and that night believers gathered their ashes and buried them near the river mouth. From these graves the vast necropolis grew, yielding sarcophagi, mosaics, and grave goods. Now managed by the National Archaeological Museum of Catalonia (MNAT), it forms part of the UNESCO-listed Archaeological Ensemble of Tárraco. Tip: don't miss the early Christian sarcophagus carvings in the site museum, and combine it with the nearby Roman remains. It is a rare place to see the resurrection faith of the early church.

✝ PILGRIM'S REFLECTIONThe countless graves here testify to the resurrection hope of early believers who saw death not as an end but as sleep. Even under persecution, they buried their loved ones trusting they would rise again with Christ. Before the bold death of the martyr Fructuosus, let us consider where our own faith is rooted. "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live" (John 11:25).
