Korea Baptist Theological University and Seminary, the only seminary of the Korean Baptist denomination, has its roots in the Baptist Bible Academy established in Dong-gu, Daejeon, in 1953. American Southern Baptist missionary John A. Abernathy and others opened the school to train pastors amid the turmoil of liberation and war, and its spiritual lineage reaches back to the Gongju Bible Academy begun in 1903. Renamed the Baptist Theological School in 1954, it moved through Jung-gu and settled at its present site in Hagi-dong, Yuseong-gu, in 1992, becoming Baptist Theological University in 1993 and Korea Baptist Theological University in 2020. Standing on the Baptist tradition that values believer's baptism by personal confession and the autonomy of each congregation, the school has raised pastors and missionaries to serve Baptist churches at home and abroad. Its quiet campus in Daejeon's university district is living evidence of how a small Bible academy in Gongju a century ago grew into today's theological education.
