Godaedo is a small island off the coast of Ocheon-myeon in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, recorded as the place where the German-born missionary Karl F. A. Gützlaff, the first Protestant missionary to set foot on Korean soil, landed in 1832. Arriving aboard the British East India Company merchant ship Lord Amherst, he stayed off Godaedo for about twenty days from late July that year, requesting trade of the Joseon court while distributing Chinese-language Scriptures, tracts, and medicine to the islanders and teaching them how to plant potatoes and the Lord's Prayer. Although his request for trade was refused and the encounter was brief, this visit is regarded as the sowing of the gospel's seed in Joseon, ahead of Robert Thomas, Underwood, and Appenzeller. Today a church of the Presbyterian Church of Korea stands on the island, and inside the sanctuary a small archive room introducing Gützlaff's life and the Godaedo mission welcomes pilgrims. Reachable only by boat, this remote island is remembered as the quiet first gate through which the gospel first stepped onto this land.
