총신대학교는 대한예수교장로회(합동) 교단의 신학교로, 1901년 평양에서 마포삼열(S. A. Moffett) 등이 세운 조선예수교장로회신학교(평양신학교)에 그 뿌리를 둔다. 평양신학교는 1907년 첫 졸업생 7인을 배출하고 그중 길선주 목사 등이 한국 장로교의 초석을 놓았으나, 1938년 일제의 신사참배 강요를 거부하다 폐교되었다. 광복 후 신앙의 정통을 지키려는 흐름 속에서 1948년 남산에서 장로회신학교로 다시 문을 열었고, 1959년 교단 분열 후 보수 측 신학교로 이어져 1965년 동작구 사당동으로 이전, 1995년 총신대학교로 교명을 바꾸었다. 개혁주의 신학과 웨스트민스터 신앙고백 전통을 표방하며 한국 보수 장로교의 목회자를 길러 온 대표적 신학 교육 기관이다.

Chongshin University is the theological school of the Presbyterian Church of Korea (Hapdong), rooted in the Presbyterian Theological Seminary (Pyongyang Seminary) founded in 1901 in Pyongyang by Samuel A. Moffett and others. The seminary produced its first seven graduates in 1907—among them Pastor Kil Seon-ju, who helped lay the foundation of Korean Presbyterianism—but was closed in 1938 for refusing Shinto shrine worship under Japanese rule. After liberation it reopened as Presbyterian Theological Seminary at Namsan in 1948; following the 1959 denominational split it continued as the conservative seminary, moved to Sadang-dong, Dongjak-gu in 1965, and became Chongshin University in 1995. Professing Reformed theology and the Westminster tradition, it has trained conservative Presbyterian pastors.
